Most Rishikesh guides tell you it's the yoga capital of the world. This one tells you what an auto from the station should cost, why your drive will take longer than Google says, and which months are genuinely worth avoiding.
You will arrive at Rishikesh railway station, or be dropped at the ISBT bus stand, and an auto driver will quote you ₹400 to Laxman Jhula. The locals standing behind you are paying ₹150. Neither of you is wrong about the destination — you are just being quoted the tourist rate, and it is entirely legal for him to try.
The shared autos that run the Ram Jhula–Laxman Jhula–Tapovan route charge ₹20 to ₹30 a person. They leave when full, which in season means a two-minute wait. If you are carrying a large bag and want the whole vehicle, ₹150 to ₹200 is the honest private rate from the station to Laxman Jhula, and ₹250 if you are going up to Tapovan.
The number that matters: say the price you expect before you get in. "Laxman Jhula, ₹150?" gets a yes or a counter. Getting in first and asking after means you have already lost the negotiation.
Google Maps will tell you Delhi to Rishikesh is five and a half hours. It is, at 4am on a Tuesday in November. Any other time, budget seven to eight — and during Char Dham season (May to June), nine is realistic.
The reason is not distance. It is that the last 40km, from Haridwar onward, is a two-lane road shared with pilgrimage traffic, and the stretch through Haridwar itself can add an hour on its own during festival weeks.
| Route | Distance | Maps says | Actually budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi → Rishikesh | 240 km | 5h 30m | 7–8h (9h in May–June) |
| Dehradun → Rishikesh | 45 km | 1h | 1h 15m |
| Haridwar → Rishikesh | 25 km | 40m | 50m–1h 30m in season |
| Rishikesh → Kedarnath base | 210 km | 7h | 9–10h mountain road |
That last row is the one that catches people out. Mountain roads in Uttarakhand run at roughly 22 to 32 km/h in practice, not the 50 km/h a flat-road estimate assumes. A 200km Himalayan drive is a full day, not an afternoon.
These are 2026 prices we have paid or verified, not scraped estimates. Per person, per day, excluding your travel to Rishikesh.
| Backpacker | Mid-range | Comfortable | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed | ₹400–700 hostel dorm, Tapovan | ₹1,200–2,200 guesthouse, private room | ₹3,500–6,000 riverside boutique |
| Food | ₹300–450 local thali ₹80–120 | ₹600–900 café meals | ₹1,200–1,800 |
| Getting around | ₹60–100 shared autos | ₹200–350 | ₹600–900 private car on call |
| Activities | ₹200–400 | ₹500–900 | ₹1,000–2,000 |
| Per day | ₹1,000–1,650 | ₹2,500–4,350 | ₹6,300–10,700 |
A backpacker week therefore runs about ₹7,000 to ₹11,500. The single biggest swing factor is not accommodation — it is how many times you take a private auto instead of a shared one. Four private rides a day is ₹600; four shared is ₹100.
Rishikesh rafting is genuinely excellent and genuinely dangerous when done badly. The Ganga here runs Grade II to Grade IV depending on the stretch and the season.
Rishikesh has hundreds of rafting booths and considerably fewer licensed operators. The ones that matter:
The honest calendar, month by month:
| Months | What it's like | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Feb–Mar | 15–25°C, rafting open, quiet before the rush | Best |
| Oct–Nov | Post-monsoon clarity, river at its best, comfortable | Best |
| Apr | Warming, still good, crowds building | Good |
| Dec–Jan | Cold (4–18°C), fewest people, rafting limited | Good if you don't mind cold |
| May–Jun | 35°C+, Char Dham traffic, everything full and pricier | Avoid |
| Jul–Sep | Monsoon, no rafting, landslide risk on hill roads | Avoid |
If you can only go in May or June, go anyway — but book accommodation weeks ahead, expect to pay 40% more, and do not plan any onward hill driving.
Above Laxman Jhula. Where most travellers stay: cafés, yoga schools, guesthouses at every price. Lively, walkable, slightly removed from the ghats. Best default choice for a first visit.
Closer to the ashrams and the aarti. Quieter in the evening, more pilgrims than backpackers, generally cheaper. Better if you came for the spiritual side rather than the cafés.
Riverside camps 15–30km up the road. Beautiful, and you will need transport for everything. Good for two nights as part of a rafting trip, less good as a whole-week base.
Plan a Rishikesh trip with honest road times →Three full days covers the aarti, one rafting run, the Beatles Ashram and a day walking the ghats without rushing. Five to seven if you are doing a yoga course or using it as a base for a Himalayan onward trip.
Broadly yes, and it is one of the more comfortable Indian towns for it — large international presence, walkable, plenty of women travelling alone. The usual caution applies after dark on the quieter stretches between Ram Jhula and Tapovan, where the road is unlit. Shared autos stop running around 9pm.
₹150–200 private to Laxman Jhula, ₹20–30 shared. If you are quoted ₹400, that is the tourist rate and a counter of ₹180 is usually accepted.
No. Rishikesh is a legally dry city and meat is not served within municipal limits. The nearest places serving alcohol are outside the municipal boundary, towards Haridwar.
No. Rafting typically runs late September to late June and closes during the monsoon when the flow becomes unsafe. Any operator selling monsoon rafting is one to avoid.
